THE MAGIC WORD

Daily writing prompt
How do you express your gratitude?

When I think about gratitude, the first thing that comes to mind is just saying thank you. It’s simple, but honestly, I don’t think we say it enough. We usually save it for after someone does us a favor or gives us something, but gratitude is also in the small, quiet moments.

Living in Japan actually made me even more aware of this word. Here, people say “arigatou gozaimasu” *thank you in Japanese* all the time, even for the tiniest things. At first, I wondered if using it so much would make it lose its meaning, but it’s the opposite. The more it’s said, the more natural and powerful it feels. It’s a good balance too, you show respect to others while also feeling respected yourself.

That inspired me to say thank you more often to my friends and family back home, not just when they do something big, but simply to appreciate that they’re there. Cause WHY NOT?

Like this must be too much but when I’m having a lazy day scrolling through reels and suddenly think,

“This would be so much funnier if Bonny was here.”

That small moment makes me feel thankful. I try to let that person know even if it’s just a quick message or just letting them know that I am grateful for them the next time we talk. Try saying thank you genuinely today don’t be scared of sounding cheesy or lame. Your friend or anyone who hears that will appreciate it, and so will you. You’ll even see how your bond gets stronger in that moment.

And what’s cool about thank you like I said- is that it never loses its meaning, no matter how often you say it. Other words like “sorry,” “please,” or even “I love you” can get overused or feel complicated if they’re not said with care. But thank you always feels genuine. It’s simple, soft, and real.

No wonder it’s called the magic word.
